Military Dog Training Center Almost Complete

Gerry Lukowski looked out at the muddy, fenced-in field.

He imagined military dogs leaping ladders and crawling through culverts. He thought about 50-foot-high lights illuminating the training ground for dogs who one day could help fight terrorists.

And he thought about how the $2.2 million facility soon will be ready – the first Reserve dog kennel in the country for all military branches.

"It's going to be a good deal," said Lukowski, a lieutenant colonel and construction and facilities manger for the state's Army National Guard.

The largely federally funded project is near completion. The military kennel will start housing dogs this spring. And the dogs will come from San Antonio, trained at the Lackland Air Force Base.
