Shocking

It is not unusual for people to discard their pet when it becomes pregnant or has babies.

"We have seen the same people coming in year after year with litters of animals," Yarborough said, adding that educating people about spaying and neutering their pets is a "top priority."

The shelter had a 73 percent euthanasia rate in 2005, with 8,619 animals taken in and 6,305 put to sleep. When the animal being dropped off has puppies or kittens, the rate is even higher.

"It's very hard to find homes for them," Yarborough said. "Nobody is willing to take on the responsibility of a dog with puppies."

This is pretty awful. A 73 percent euthanasia rate? Why would you let your pet get pregnant and not care?
