I watched National Treasure: Book of Secrets the other day, and it reminded me of when I was on vacation to Mt Rushmore... of course, I brought my dog along. When the old dog passes away, take time to make memories and grieve. But, if you are a dog person, you are going to want another dog at some point. The new dog doesn't replace the old dog, but the new dog will fill that hole in your life. Then learn to appreciate the new dog and don't try to make the new dog into the old dog.
