We Need Updated Breed Standards!

Do you know what a Breed Standard is?

The American Kennel Club is an association of individual dog breed clubs…Pug clubs, German Shepherd Dog clubs, Doberman clubs, Golden Retriever clubs, etc.

Each club has a defined standard for what its breed should behave and look like. That standard then defines what that breed is, and which dogs are considered the epitome of that breed, suitable for breeding purposes.

Well, these breed standards are now being used AGAINST law abiding dog owners and breeders.

New dog breed bans and using these standards to define which dogs they want to get rid of, and they are using these breed standards to prove that these dogs are “vicious” by their very nature and description.

Take the American Staffordshire Terrier (the show dog version of the American Pit Bull Terrier). Here’s what the official Breed Standard says about what this dog is:

“General Impression The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. His courage is proverbial.”

So, what do we get out of this? We have a courageous, powerful dog.

That type of definition hurts this breed more than you might realize.

Here’s what it should say:

“General Impression The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is people friendly, loyal, animated when at play or working, calm when at rest, intelligent, highly trainable, and a fine family companion dog which is good with children and protective of the family and home from threatening criminals. His courage is proverbial. The American Staffordshire Terrier excels at many jobs, including high level obedience competitions, search and rescue services, weight pulling competitions, therapy work, and narcotics detection, bomb and fire detective work, and police work. The American Staffordshire Terrier is not eligible for breeding unless it has qualified as a family dog, and for one of the above mentioned types of job, through appropriate temperament testing and qualification guidelines set out by the breed clubs.

The judge shall dismiss from the ring any shy or vicious American Staffordshire Terrier.

Shyness: A dog shall be judged fundamentally shy if, refusing to stand for examination, it shrinks away from the judge; if it fears an approach from the rear; if it shies at sudden and unusual noises to a marked degree.

Viciousness: A dog that attacks or attempts to attack either the judge or its handler, is definitely vicious. An aggressive or belligerent attitude towards other dogs shall not be deemed viciousness.”

We have the same problem with a lot of other breed standards.

Take the Doberman breed standard:

“General Appearance The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.”

This breed standard could be changed for the better. Here is my suggestion:

General Appearance The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.

The Doberman is people friendly dog, loyal, animated when at play or when working, calm when at rest, intelligent, highly trainable, and a fine family companion dog which is good with children and protective of the family and home from threatening criminals. The Doberman excels at many jobs, including high level obedience competitions, search and rescue services, therapy work, and narcotics detection, bomb and fire detective work, and police work. If we were to start defining objective, measurable standards for each breed, then these standards could be used to prove they aren’t related to the wacko dogs that backyard breeders create and sell. We need to be able to say: THAT DOG ISN’T A ____________ (Pit bull, Doberman, Rottweiler, American Stafforshire Terrier, Akita, etc.) because it isn’t related to any QUALIFIED dog, and doesn’t display the temperament characteristics of the breed.

We can’t do that now with the way the Breed Standards are being written and published.

We could also use better breed standards to improve the breeds and their reputations in the community as useful dogs. We need to define measurable, and positive, behavioral traits in our breeds. Not only to provide a guide to breeders, but as a way of defining what each breed is and what it is useful for in society.

The current Breed Standards are being written INTO LAW, and used to define which dogs to ban.

The current Breed Standards are being used in LAWSUITS to prove the dogs are dangerous.

The current Breed Standards are being used BY LEGISLATURES to write anti-dog legislation.

The current Breed Standards are being used to DISCRIMINATE AGAINST MANY BREEDS in insurance policies, and homeowners association rules.

We need to turn these methods around and use them to our benefit, and for the benefits of our dogs.

No "Hip Hop" In My Home

“One of the attackers was described as a chubby white youth wearing three-quarter-length trousers. He had with him a Staffordshire bull terrier dog.”

This is a gang type of violence. It is about time we stopped glorifying the gang lifestyle… in rap music, dress, attitudes, conversation and in our homes. Don’t tell me it is OK for guys to be calling our daughters “bitches and whores”, dropping out of school, dealing in drugs, committing violence, not having jobs, and disrespecting the very society which lets them live this lazy, criminal, cowardly lifestyle.

Why is it that we glorify such a lifestyle, when it leads to the destruction of our youth?

And if you are a dog lover, this kind of trash affects your rights to own a dog. Gang types like to parade around with their dogs to look tough, and they use dogs to protect their drug operations. The resulting pit bull attacks, from the whole gang/ pit bull association result in punitive dog ownership laws all over the world.

If I had kids, I would ban gang related behaviors and materials in my home. NO WAY I’d allow that kind of filth in my home. If I had to, I'd move to a different community, city, state or country. IT IS SHAMEFUL what gang members are doing to each other, to their families and their communities. There is no honor in being a criminal. No dignity. No legacy you will want remembered. And how could you live with yourself if your behaviors resulted in the death of a friend or family member? If you can tolerate this kind of thing, then you are no better than any terrorist. You are as bad as the murders who killed 3,000 people on 9/11.

Dog owners need to be pro-law enforcement. Dog owners need to be pro-social, not anti-social. Gang violence is destroying our rights to reasonably own a dog.

Serious Dog Attack In Illinois... Is Pit Bull Ban On It's Way Again?

“A bill died in the Illinois State Senate in May that would have increased responsibilities for owners of certain breeds of dogs, including requiring owners to buy mandatory insurance, requiring the dogs to wear orange tags, and creating criminal penalties for violators”

Three dogs attacked this kid and sent him to the hospital. Three loose pit bull dogs.

You can bet this will revive the efforts to ban them in Illinois.

This town needs a new set of dog laws. Chaining dogs out isn’t a proper way of containing them when they aren’t being supervised.

The Republicans are losing because they don't preach a conservative message any more. They have become the party of "everybody"...

It's pretty bad... they preached a strong conservative message to get in power, then abandoned that when they got the power.

IN THIS TIME of moral and political crises, it is the responsibility of the youth of America to affirm certain eternal truths.

WE, as young conservatives believe:

THAT foremost among the transcendent values is the individual's use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force;

THAT liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom;

THAT the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice;

THAT when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty;

THAT the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power;

THAT the genius of the Constitution - the division of powers - is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federal government;

THAT the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs;

THAT when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation, that when it takes from one to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both;

It was the Sharon Statement which summed up the principles which led the Republicans to power.

Pro-dog activists need to come up with their own Sharon Statement of principles. We are all running around doing separate activities, without a clear and consistent vision of what we want. So our energies are disbursed and wasted.

What is it that we believe in?

What is reasonable dog ownership?

What does a fair dog bite law say?

What underlying philosophical principles do we believe in?

Without defining these issues, we don’t have a cause that we can get our supporters, and the public, to sympathize with and support.

National Dog Day 2006 is an upcoming event to raise funds for rescued dogs.

Broad Political Trends Affect Dog Ownership Rights

There are Left Wing Wackos and Right Wing Wackos.

I have described them both in this blog. Both are a threat to our right to own a dog.

In the 1940’s, the Nazi’s went from house to house and destroyed people’s guard dogs. They almost put the Dogue de Bordeaux into extinction. The rise of the far Right (Nazi’s) was a backlash against the failures of the Weimar Republic. People wanted prosperity, and they wanted law and order, of which they had neither.

Europeans have a tendency to swing to extremes in politics, which is why we have to avoid idolizing or imitating their cultures and political systems. Private property rights, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, etc. all impact your right to own a dog.

Which is why I stress you shouldn’t view the threat to your dog ownership only comes from the far Left. Today, that is the case. But, without social stability, law and order, personal liberty, and freedom for opportunity and prosperity, the public eventually tosses the Left out and goes to the far Right. And then your dog rights go away.

Here is an interesting quote, illustrating my point:

And the same way, if you look at the legislation that's been proposed in the Netherlands, that would never stand up in our U.S. Supreme Court. So while the American people were apologizing for the Patriot Act, to their left-wing European friends, they have not a clue that the legislation a lot of European parliaments is so far to the right of anything that we could imagine, such as deporting a naturalized citizen, without a hearing, as if an Arab-American were in the United States, and somebody accused him of terrorism, they just sent him back to Egypt. We could not do that.

HH: What do you mean by man on a horse? Explain to the audience, Victor Davis Hanson.

VDH: The idea that there will be somebody who will promise them to bring order, to bring back respect, to bring back reverence for tradition, and to get the economy, to get the society back on an even keel, in the European tradition. And that'll be quite unexpected by us, because we keep thinking that they're left-wing and post-modern, but we don't read their history. When they have a great susceptability toward aristocratic order and stability. And to be honest, right-wing dictators, they seem to prop up throughout European history.”

Don't Get Smug, It Could Happen Here, Too

We had better learn the lessons of France, right here in the good ol’ USA…

We have our ghettos, our unassimilated racial minorities, the gang/ pit bull problems, and the socialists who run the major cities across our land.

The riots could happen here, too. I think they are already on the way. I mourn when driving in the "bad" parts of town, in any city, and see young men standing around with no jobs, not in school, and living the gang lifestyle. I hate the way the radicals are able to preach to these young men, philosophies of victimhood and hatred. Where are the parents? Where are the jobs? Why are these living conditions subsidized by the "powers that be"? Why are we allowing this?

A sign of what’s to come? The pit bull bans being enacted in many cities across this country.

Same breed of socialists, same kind of worthless solutions to the problems of society.

Pit Bulls In France

Remember what I said about the criminal elements in Europe were responsible for the breed bans going on there? Well, the socialist system is also responsible.

The rioting problems in France (which are manifest in most European countries) aren’t the dogs. The problems are their socialist systems, which promise equality and prosperity and happiness for all, but instead deliver inequality and poverty and misery.

Note how these countries always try to go around the problems in their systems instead of going at the root causes.

That is why dog lovers say “it’s the deed, not the breed”. Fix societal problems, and the dog problems will go away.

Do you really think if France or Germany killed off all their dogs, that they wouldn’t be having all these social problems?

It’s not the dogs that need to go. It’s the politicians and intellectuals that enable their socialist systems that need to go. They need jobs in private industry, instead of sucking off everyone else like parasites.

Phoenix Dog Needs A New Home

I have a friend who has suffered some significant personal setbacks over the past couple of years. Now, she is in a situation where she has to give up one of her pets because of a pet restriction in the apartment complex she lives in.

I am seeking a home for her dog…

Her dog is an adult, female, spayed, trained Border Collie/ Lab mix. A nice dog, playful, but excitable (which makes her bark and seem ferocious when on leash at times, especially near other dogs). I love this dog, but I can’t take her in myself. This dog is in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Are you interested, or know of someone interested?

"Certified" Dog Behaviorists?

“Unlike dog trainers, behaviorists work to modify behavior, not train for a task, says Ellen Lindell, diplomat to the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.”

That’s what I feel is wrong about the so-called “certified” behaviorists coming out of veterinary schools. They oftentimes scorn dog trainers, and figure that all they need to do is pop some pills in the dog, do some desensitization work, and the dogs will be fine. Well, it doesn’t work that way. Sorry. I read your scientific studies and papers, and they are sorely lacking. Get out of the laboratory and start working dogs in the real world.

ANOTHER PIT BULL BAN IN CANADA

“Mayor Gary Hopper says no one has been bitten or attacked by a pit bull in the town, but adds that some people have been barked at or threatened by their look. Local pit bull owner Shelly Wilson says she doesn't know why the dogs are being banned when the community has never had a problem with them.”

“Under the new bylaw, anyone caught with a pit bull can be fined up to $1,000, serve up to a month in jail, or both.”

Didn’t the mayor have anything else better to do?

This is outrageous.

FAKING IT

“Singletons in Germany are using their pets to help them get a date after a new dating agency dubbed Date-a-Dog was set up.”

If you are a dog lover, I think it is a huge mistake to seriously date or marry someone who isn’t.

I’ve seen the kinds of marriage problems that ensue when one person is into dogs and the other isn’t.

I’ve seen the problems which happen when people use their pets to meet a prospective mate… only to find someone who doesn’t really like dogs, but fakes it so as to get into the relationship.

I’ve also seen the disasters when people divorce, and the pets become a tug-of-war toy between the parties.

We need better laws governing marriage, divorce and pets.

DOG JOKES

I think it is important to have fun with your dog every day. They need it, you need it, and your relationship with your dog needs it.

So, here’s some dog fun for today…

THE MOVIE

A MAN goes into a cinema with his dog to watch a film. It's a romantic comedy and when there's a funny scene the dog starts laughing.

A little later on there's a sad part and suddenly the dog starts crying.

This goes on throughout the entire film, laughing and crying at all the right places. A man sitting a few rows back has witnessed the entire thing and decides to follow the man out.
In the foyer, he approaches the dog owner and says: "That's truly amazing!"

"It certainly is," the dog owner replied. "He hated the book!"

THE VETERINARIAN AND THE ROTTWEILER

A MAN takes his Rottweiler to the vet and says, "My dog's cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?

"Well," says the vet, "let's have a look at him". So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth.

Finally, he says "I'm going to have to put him down." "What? Because he's cross-eyed?" said the man.

"No, because he's really heavy," replied the vet.

BREED STANDARD FOR A PUMPKIN (In honor of Thanksgiving)

General Appearance-Round and orange. The history of the pumpkin goes back to ancient times. Pumpkins appeared in the drawings of the ancient Egyptians, often next to dogs that have been described variously as obvious ancestors of either the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or the Pharaoh Hound. The pumpkins claim to ancient origin is also upheld by its mention in great classics of literature such as Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella.

As befitting such an ancient and storied gourd, the pumpkin should present an impression of size, shell strength and graceful symmetry to the observer.

Size, Proportion, Substance- The bigger the better sums up the question of size nicely. Proportion is most important as the stately gourd should sit firm and stable while presenting an easily carveable face. Pumpkins are filled with a rather stringy, orange substance. This should be removed before showing.

Head - Pumpkin expression is left open to the whim of the carver. Plain triangle eyes and nose to be severely penalized.

Neck, Topline, Fore and Hindquarters - Pumpkins possessing any of these features must be disqualified. Judges will call for an exorcist at their discretion.

Color - A shiny, deep orange the color of the University of Tennessee Football team uniform is most desired. Pale, washed out color to be severely penalized.

Gait - a pumpkin of proper balance and proportion will roll with smoothness and grace. Out of round movement to be penalized to the extent it interferes with being stolen by vagrant teens, rolled down the driveway, and smashed to smithereens on the road.

Temperament -The pumpkin is a stoic and stationary fruit, not given to fits of needless exercise.

WHERE DO PETS COME FROM?

A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.

And it was a good animal.

And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him
DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.

And they were comforted.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."

And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn't care one way or the other.

France Burns While Chirac Fiddles

I’m not too surprised at the level of violence going on in France.

France is a great country being wrecked by the corrupting influence of socialism. We all know why France is a sell out to dictatorial regimes (WARNING: Adults Only... brutal violence), why it is said that Chirac gets a large slice of his campaign contributions from corrupt foreign powers, why France spies on its “friends”, and why the French are generally hated by many people. Sometimes when a country knows it is wrong, it uses hostility, finger pointing, dirty tricks, arrogance, and its apologist friends to fend off the prying eyes of public scrutiny.

So, now we hear this…

“French government officials said they would announce a plan Monday for combating the violence and its root causes of high unemployment, poverty and discrimination in the poor communities where the violence is concentrated.”

Do you really believe that those in power in France, who got their country into the mess it is in, can now do a “180” and lead France out? No way. The “root cause” is the socialist politicians they have in power who have erected another failed socialist state. Even the socialist sympathizers here in the US don’t have the solution, so this kind of thing isn’t just a French phenomenon. I wonder if African Americans are going to start resenting the wacko Leftwing media who are portraying the rioters in France as “African immigrants”, to avoid saying the rioters are Muslim, the Iranians are probably behind the rioting as an intimidation tactic to derail the drive to stop their nuclear ambitions, the French leaders are corrupt and incompetent, the problem rests solely on the shoulders of the socialists, and that race has nothing to do with what is going on there. Leftists will always lie about the “root cause” of a social problem, when the problem is the Leftists!

My point is, when you have a bad political system, or a bad set of laws in place, you have to change the rules of the game. You can’t continue to work with the same folks and expect new results.

That truth is evident in our fight against bad dog laws. We continue to vote for the same politicians who voted in the laws we hate, then we go begging them to change the laws… and we find ourselves defeated at the end of our efforts.

We need to get involved in the political process. We need to organize, from small regional interest groups, to something national and international and professionally managed. We need to start electing pro-dog candidates. We need to identify who will vote with us, and then put resources towards getting those folks elected.

Currently, the fight has been waged in the courts and in city council meetings. That means we play by their rules… the laws which are already on the books. We need to put the fight on our terms, by influencing who is sitting on the city councils and presiding over our courts.

In some ways, our targeted dogs are like the canaries in the mineshaft. When the canary dies, you know the atmosphere is poisonous. When you see wacko interest groups rise in power, you know social unrest is eventually going to happen. When you see your dog ownership rights being eroded, it is a sign your have a sick society.

Dog owners are citizens and voters. We don’t have to, nor do we want to, nor should we protest or do violence like the wackos. We can work within the system and change it.

Dog Barking Laws = Dog Ban Laws

Have you ever considered the dog barking laws in your town?

In many cities, the laws are completely outrageous.

All you need is a nasty neighbor and a dog. Your neighbor doesn’t like you, so they complain about your dog barking… even if your dog can’t be heard at all. Then you get a complaint notice and warning from the city. In some places, if someone files 3 complaints, the city can come and take your dog away from you… even if the complaints aren’t substantiated!

I know of one case where the dog owner, and her dog, even when they weren’t home… the neighbor was making complaints to the city. This customer of mine had paid nearly $10,000 in legal fees to fight the city. The city either wanted her to get rid of her dogs, or have them debarked (an inhumane surgical procedure where the dog’s vocal cords are surgically removed).

I know of another regarding a professional dog kennel.

Check this one out… This is a real letter I received from this kennel operator… now, tell me, don’t you think the dog barking laws need changing?

My husband and I own a boarding facility. We have a disgruntled neighbor causing trouble. Their latest stunt is to have a officer they know place a habitual barking citation on our dog boarding facility. This is to cause trouble with our conditional use. What I have heard via other trainers and Animal behaviorist is habitual barking does not exist, it is actually separation anxiety barking and it does not exist in boarding facilities.

First, you need an attorney involved. This is primarily a legal issue. I have seen this kind of thing before with neighbors. Second, you should run a 24 hour surveillance camera with microphone at your facility, to document what the real circumstances at your business. And to see if the neighbors are harassing the dogs to make them bark even more.

Regarding behavior. Dogs will bark out of boredom, or as a way of talking to the other dogs, or out of worry as they see dogs they don’t know, and also you can have dogs bark with separation anxiety. I have an article about separation anxiety at the my web page. If it is separation anxiety, you also see desperate attempts to escape, as well as typical signs of anxiety: whining, drooling… the dogs almost drool all over themselves, pacing, etc. The escape attempts can be life threatening… eating through the chain link, climbing the fencing, getting bloody paws and faces from escape attempts, etc. I doubt that this is the reason your dogs are barking.

Yes this does help. We do have an attorney involved two actually.

We also have a security cameras that show if anyone comes onto our property again. But interesting enough it shows this woman hiding behind the vegetables in their renter’s vegetable garden. We also have the employees that are willing to make statements that the dogs were not outside nor were they barking at that time of the day. Plus I have done comparison tapes that prove they are lying.

The animal control office with the sheriff department is the same one putting the citation on this facility for habitual barking. Yet she can not define it to anyone.

We had a sound testing done that proves the sound level outside at property lines. And we have heard them playing dog barking tapes and heard them slamming shed doors repeatedly, shouting as loud as they can. And we caught them red handed hassling the dogs at 6:00 am one morning. Our security camera does not have audio so I would have to leave a video camera up at all times. It might come to that.

The one time the dogs were outside that they are complaining about, the five dogs that were outside were barking at these neighbors.

We have had dogs barking when those neighbors decide to target shoot 60 feet from the end of our driveway with high powered deer rifles. Those are louder then any dog that has ever barked here. And I have a tape of the rifle shots.

The reason they bark is simple disturbance barking which every facility in the country has happening. It is not habitual barking.

These people are just trying to close us down and we are legal and they ran across two very stubborn people that won't do what they want. They are very spoiled adults with nothing better to do with themselves. My sister thinks they have a personal vendetta against me.

Are you aware that the Communists in China tried to ban ALL dogs? Why? Well, let’s go into that a bit. Then, ask yourself, if you love dogs, do you want to be aligned with any far left leaning group?

What is one of the first signs of civilization in man’s history? The domestication of the dog. Whatever philosophy, religion or political movement which hates dogs will be that which is also against the civilizing forces of mankind.

To the wacko Left, your ownership of a dog is a “bourgeois” luxury. In Marxism, by definition, if you have more wealth than the next guy, you must have gotten it by exploiting someone else. Thus, if you have a dog, which is a sign of being “wealthy or propertied” (dog owners typically have a home and a job… but to the far Left, that’s considered greedy and immoral), then that pet needs to be taken away from you and destroyed because that harms society. Whatever political movement is based upon "victimhood", you can bet they will tend to work against your right to own a dog.

On Aggression

I have been a fan, for many years, of the thought provoking writings of Konrad Lorenz.

Here are a few good quotes, from his book, “On Aggression” with some interesting comments from yours truly…

“What is the value of all this fighting? In nature, fight is such an ever-present process, its behavior mechanisms and weapons are so highly developed and have been so obviously arisen under the selection pressure of a species preserving function, that it is our duty to ask this Darwinian question.”

Aggression preserves species. That includes fish, insects, humans and dogs.

“Almost every animal capable of self-defense, from the smallest rodent upward, fights furiously when it is cornered and has no means of escape.”

Isn’t this the point I’ve been stressing in this blog? You can’t legislate aggression out of nature, as some legislators are trying to do. You also can’t wish it away, as most animal rights nutcases want to do.

With a Disneyland view of nature, we only see aggression as being bad.

But, would you fault a mother for protecting her infant from an attack? Or a police officer defending you from attack? Or would you fault a parent arguing with their child over who runs the household?

Likewise, would you fault a momma dog from protecting her puppies from being attacked by your neighbor’s son? Or would you fault a police dog for biting a criminal who was threatening your life? Or would you fault a dog for setting up a pack order in its own home or at an off leash park, since rank order ensures safe breeding, prevents future fighting and helps preserve the welfare of the weaker ones in the group?

Aggression has “species preserving functions”. You can’t program, legislate or wish them away without violating the laws of nature.

Is it any wonder that people protect their homes, even to the point of death? Is it any wonder dogs do the same?

Even so, there is a well known incident in Seattle where a dog was growling at a person from behind the fence, in its master’s home. A nutcase complained to animal control, claiming the dog was “menacing” them. Seattle has a law against dogs “menacing” people. Animal control came by, while the owner was away, seized the dog and impounded it, and the owner was cited for having a “potentially dangerous dog.” The owners fought this all the way up to the liberal leaning Washington State Supreme Court... and lost! The court ruled the city had the right to regulate dogs any way they wished. What a cowardly, foolish, ignorant... you name it... ruling. If I recall correctly, this dog was then put to death by the city. All because it barked or growled, behind a fence on its owner's property, at some dog hater who was walking by.

Was that right? Of course not. And that law is STILL on the books in Seattle, and STILL being enforced. Seattle has one of the worst dog bite laws in the USA. I wouldn’t live in the Seattle city limits and own a dog. I’d move out to the suburbs.

Racing Greyhounds vs. Greyhound Racing

I don’t have a problem with a person racing their greyhound.

But I do have a problem with professional greyhound racing.

Dogs should, first and foremost, be someone’s pet. If you want to let your dog run around with other dogs, or stage a fun match to allow your dog to run, full speed, against another dog, then fine. Have fun! I don’t even have a problem if there is betting to see which dog wins… provided your dog then goes home with you and is your beloved pet.

On the other hand, I believe it is wrong the way dogs are churned through the greyhound racing circuit. It is a business, and I don’t see any benefit to the dogs, in terms of a home life.

I also don’t have a problem with culling puppies, IF they are found to have unstable temperaments or have serious health problems. One of the worst bites I ever experienced was from a genetically fearful, 12 week old Australian Shepherd pup. That pup was sent back to the breeder to be put down, and replaced with a normal puppy, which I trained and it turned out fabulously. I do object to culling for non-health or temperament issues. If the dogs can be adopted as pets into homes, they should be. If you know that a pup is going to turn out to be vicious, then it is your responsibility as a breeder to put that puppy down. If a puppy is going to be a medical basket case, then I believe it justified to put a puppy down, too. To some folks, this comes close to the topic of human abortion or eugenics. No, it isn’t. Dogs aren’t people. Period.

The retired greyhound winners are either put to death, or rescued by greyhound rescue organizations. You never see a greyhound puppy, ever. That’s because the breeders put sub par (meaning the ones that can’t win races) puppies to death.

I’m for animal WELFARE not animal RIGHTS. There is a big difference.

Animal Rights Gone Wild!

Here is a glaring example of how foolish our dog laws are becoming…

This is why we have to be speaking out, and voting in pro dog legislators. This is the direct result of letting animal rights nuts have political power, and why we have to take it back.

OUTRAGEOUS!

“The dog was shot in the head after the officer said the animal growled and cornered him in the backyard. Owner Tamara Schuler says it was impossible for her beagle, Precious, to attack the officer. She says the 13-year-old dog was blind and deaf.”

I am a big police advocate, but this kind of shooting happens all too frequently to be justified. If these accusations are true, she should sue and the officer should be charged with a serious crime. It was a BEAGLE!

ANALYSIS: "Pit Bull Dogs" Maul 10 Year Old Boy

“A 10-year-old Aurora boy is clinging to life after his family's three pit bulls mauled him Wednesday afternoon as he was trying to get into his home.”

If this story accurately describes this dog attack, then these dogs should be put down (put to death). We always have to question the first reports of any story in the news. As this story develops over the next few days, we will know more details. This blog isn’t to point the finger at anyone in this story, and everyone, including the dogs, have to be considered innocent until proven guilty. But, for the sake of discussion, let’s assume the reported story is accurate…

Dogs should NOT attack family members, especially children.

A dog which attacks a family member unprovoked, with no prior history of that family member abusing the dog, is “vicious”. That is the true definition of “vicious”. A vicious dog has a screw loose, and should not be bred, and should be put down.

I am all for dogs protecting themselves and their families. That is normal and should be allowed by law. But, there are times when dogs are sick in the head and are dangerous. These dogs, by all accounts I’ve read, look to be vicious.

I do find it curious that the owners had been previously cited for letting their dogs run loose, and for having too many dogs. Were these dogs bred and trained for pit fighting at some point, and were these the dogs that they kept after being cited by the law? If I was investigating this case, I’d want to know that.

This kind of attack is NOT normal “pit bull” behavior. It isn’t normal for any breed of dog.

Just remember this… a “pit bull” is still just a dog. It isn’t a monster, and the same rules for breeding, training, supervision, socialization, and containment apply for them as with any other dog. When attacks like this happen, one or more of those factors will have gone wrong.

What is a Pit Bull Dog?

I have trained many pit bull dogs of various breeds... MOST ARE NICE DOGS, a few were nasty (and that would true concerning ANY breed of dog). The nice ones are typical of the pit fighting breeds. The nasty ones were usually made that way because of a ruined puppyhood (neglect, teasing, lack of socialization, abuse, etc.) or because of backyard breeding (poor/ questionable genetics). A properly socialized and trained pit bull dog is a fine companion for children and adults AND IS SAFE TO OWN. I believe that almost EVERY pit bull attack could be prevented by a.) Only purchasing a dog from a good breeder; b.) Proper socialization of the puppies; c.) Proper training of the dogs; d.) Proper supervision by responsible adults; and e.) Proper containment when not supervised. THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE FOLKS!!! This is true for all dogs, not just this one breed. When a breed gets a bad reputation for biting, these same principles apply. It is foolish, and foolhardy, to focus on the breed instead of proper dog breeding and management techniques.

WHAT IS A PIT BULL TERRIER?
(Never forget: It is just a dog, not a monster or a weapon... it is a pet)

1. A cross between a bulldog and a terrier


2. The Bulldog was used for it’s physical toughness, courage and tenacity


3. The terrier was used for it’s desire to fight, speed and endurance


4. Was used to subdue cattle for butchers – was bred to work with animals – was a "bull-baiter", small & fast enough to grab a bull by the nose (for slaughter) without being stomped or kicked to death in the process. Europeans didn’t have cowboys, so they used bulldogs to grab the bull, so the butcher could club it to death.


5. Shouldn't be fearful of people, other dogs or other animals


6. Will be harmed psychologically if it has been abused, teased, and/or neglected


7. Will have emotional problems if poorly socialized


8. Not able to be rehabilitated after being wrecked; this isn't a pit bull problem, however... it is an abuse problem... the abusers should be penalized!


9. People train them to be nasty by purposely neglecting them, making them fight for their lives, giving them drugs, abusing them, etc. You can wreck ANY puppy by doing this.


10. It’s the dog of choice for drug dealers, so they wreck the dogs, and breed them, to make money and to protect them from raids and gang attacks


11. Backyard breeders don’t know what they are doing: they breed for quick bucks instead of using good breeding practices, so we end up with dogs with weak temperaments.


12. Buyers of the dogs don’t know how to pick the right dog, and they don’t know how to raise the dog properly. You have to be just as selective as you would with any other breed.


13. Not the right breed for personal protection; the dogs were created for animal work (bull baiting)


14. Able to climb trees (so can other dogs!)


15. Highly trainable


16. Generally good with people, other animals, and other dogs, PROVIDED that they were raised properly


17. No hard evidence that pit bulls bite more people than any other breed; it is a myth that this breed is inherently vicious! DON'T BELIEVE THE DOG HATERS!!!


18. They aren’t born "mean" or "unpredictable" (though, any breed will have individuals that are wacky... that is just the way genetics works)

22. There are a lot of "look alike" breeds, and mongrels, that are not really "pit bull terriers"; lots of so-called "pit bulls" are mixed bred dogs, oftentimes without any pit bull in the dog!

Cities with Pit Bull or breed-ban laws in Washington State: Algona, Buckley, Enumclaw, Everett, Inland, Kenniwick, King Co, Kirkland, Moxee, Neah Bay (has BANNED ROTTWEILERS), Oak Harbor, Prosser, Pullman, Seatac, Sunnyside (has restricted 'pit bulls'), Toppenosh, Yakima (has BANNED 'pit bulls'). BREED BANS ARE IMMORAL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL.... SO FIGHT BREED SPECIFIC BANS IN THE COURTS AND IN THE LEGISLATURES!!!

25. They give a warning before they attack, just like any other dog. Usually, if you see a Pit Bull Terrier that’s snarling and lunging at someone or another animal, it’s a dog that’s AFRAID and a FEAR BITER. Watch for raised hair on the back and a stiff tail. If you are unsure, ask the owner if you can pet their dog, just like you would with any other dog.

29. Typically not very territorial with people, but territorial with other animals. Like most dogs, they will chase cats, squirrels, birds, and rodents. Many pit bull terriers are stolen from houses and vehicles... because they won't protect themselves. They are NOT good protection dogs (and don't let anyone tell you otherwise). Why is it that you don't see them on police forces or doing military scout work? Because they aren't suited for protection! Watch what the professionals do... not what some wacko, novice dog breeder tells you. Stick with the doers... not the talkers. Get this dog as a PET, not a weapon. If you need protection, you should ask yourself: Do I really need a dog to protect me?


30. Gameness, which isn’t the same as dog aggression. It’s a dog that will keep working at a task without quitting, such as at weight pulling, tracking, working obedience into heat exhaustion, etc. or other trained tasks.

Suitable for the following tasks

1. Companion dog

3. Search & Rescue [** WORKING PEDIGREE]


4. Dog sports like high level obedience competition, Schutzhund, or French Ringsport are good for this breed (but they are NOT suitable for true protection work) [** WORKING PEDIGREE]


5. Narcotics detection... many would be good for this kind of job [** WORKING PEDIGREE]


6. Boar/ wild hog hunting


7. Weight pulling competition

IF I WAS TO PURCHASE A PIT BULL, I WOULDN'T GET ONE UNLESS THE PEDIGREE WAS FULL OF DOGS THAT HAD PROVEN WORKING BACKGROUND IN ONE OR MORE OF THE HIGHLIGHTED AREAS (MEANING THE ONES I HAVE ASTERISKED = **). TOO MANY PIT BULLS ARE BEING BRED BY "BACKYARD BREEDERS", WHO ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY OR THE GLORY, AND DON'T KNOW OR DON'T CARE THAT THEY ARE WRECKING THE BREED. Even though it is good to get a dog that has good references as being a companion, therapy, hunting or weight pulling dog... those tasks aren't demanding enough to indicate you have a well bred dog. (I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS MORAL TO USE DOGS TO FIGHT IN A PIT. It is unnatural for animals of any kind to fight like this to the death. Pit fighting serves no useful purpose, either to mankind or to nature or the dogs involved. It is no different than trophy hunting. I have no problem with hunting, provided you eat what you kill. But to kill, for killing's sake, is wrong. It is sick. It is unnatural. It is evil, twisted, perverted and pathological. It is one thing to let a dog become part of your family, and protect you from attack. That IS natural. But to force fights on animals like this is sick. We don't even allow people to fight to the death, except in war... and that is only justified in very specific circumstances... otherwise it is considered criminal. SO, DON'T BUY DOGS THAT COME FROM PIT FIGHTING BREEDERS. YOU ARE FINANCING AN IMMORAL AND UNNATURAL BLOOD SPORT THAT IS RESULTING IN SOCIETY WANTING TO DESTROY THE PIT FIGHTING BREEDS and MANY OTHER BREEDS, SUCH AS ROTTWEILERS. IF YOU LOVE THE BREED, YOU WILL HATE THE BLOOD FIGHTING SPORT.)

1. Too many good examples of the breed to ban the breed because of the few dogs that people wreck

3. If you ban the pit bulls, people will switch to another breed and wreck it (which is what is happening to the Rottweiler, Presa Canario, and other breeds) – are you then going to ban those breeds, too? Where will it stop?


4. If properly socialized and trained, they are great dogs, capable of great devotion, affection, and companionship


5. There is a difference between a "pit bull", a Pit Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and a Pit Bulldog. One is a mongrel, the others are pure bred dogs. THERE ARE MANY PIT FIGHTING BREEDS. If you destroyed every pit fighting breed in existence, it would be relatively easy to start crossbreeding dogs to create a new pit bull terrier. That is why it is folly to start banning the ownership and breeding of these dogs. People can and will either switch to owning other breeds, or will create new ones. How do you think these breeds were created in the first place?

The Best Way To Avoid Being Bitten By A Pit Bull Terrier:

Don’t be involved with people that treat their pit bulls as weapons instead of as companions

Don’t pet dogs that you don’t know to be friendly... the same rules you should apply to ALL dogs

Don’t tease the dog or make it people aggressive

Raise it as a companion dog: socialize, train, & supervise

Discourage unstable people from getting a dog of any breed

Vegetarian Dog Food?

There is an interesting article at DoggieNews.com today concerning a new vegetarian diet for dogs.

I have serious problems with feeding a dog a vegetarian diet.

Dogs are CARNIVORES and their digestive systems are designed to eat meat. They are not vegetarians. From their teeth to the enzymes in their stomachs, they are carnivores.

A vegetarian diet might induce fatal health conditions in your dog, such as Cardiomyopathy.

Here is an article I recently wrote on feeding your dog. I have personal experience with having a dog afflicted with Cardiomyopathy. I also have personal experience with treating the disease using drugs and nutrition.

Don’t take my word for it. Do the research on your own. But, I think you are foolish to mess around with your dog by giving him or her a fad diet. I am sure it is dangerous to do so. Just note that some of this doggie vegetarian diet stuff is being promoted by animal rights activists... who are more interested in their fanaticism than the health of your dog. They think they can stop predators from being predators, and create a peaceful utopia on earth. As far as I'm concerned, that's Jim Jones "Kool Aid" stuff that will kill your dog.

Canada Needs Better Dog Legislation

Canada has serious dog law problems. Check out what the Dog Legislation Council of Canada is doing to fight back.

The knee jerk reaction of many politicians, when people are trying to curb crimes which involve dogs, is to ban certain breeds of dog. That gets rid of the dogs, but it doesn’t get rid of the bad people.

You know, there are many grizzly bear attacks in Canadian parks every year. Do they try to ban grizzly bears? Or do they try to educate people instead? Because the enviro-wackos value wild animals over domesticated animals, they won’t ban a wild animal. They will hold the people responsible. But, when it comes to domesticated animals, like dogs, they blame the dog and try to ban it.

Now, in the animal kingdom, do you really think a domesticated dog has more moral reasoning than a wild animal? Should the wild animal be justified in doing what it does, without question, and the domesticated animal not be justified?

This is a classical example of the problems we face when we try to anthropomorphize animals, treating them as furry little humans instead of what they really are: animals.

When they tried to ban guns in Brazil, word is that the NRA helped out to defeat the proposal. This is a global economy and the internet makes us all able to influence politics on a worldwide basis. Those of us in the USA should help dog lovers in Canada fight these unfair dog laws. What happens there can be used as a precedent by judges and lawmakers here to enact unfair dog laws.

There are more dog lovers in Canada than dog haters. Build on that.

Environmentalism Isn't Compatible With Animal Rights

It has always seemed strange to me that so many environmentalists are also animal rights activists. I don’t think the two concepts are compatible at all. When activist groups claim they are both, they are really just animal rights wackos.

A true environmentalist is concerned with

Pollution: Animal rights supporters are against pollution because it is the product of humankind (which they see as inherently evil). If pollution harms an animal, then they are interested in pollution. But only as a way of limiting human influence in nature.

Evolution: A true animal rights activist is against evolution or science. They think, if they try hard enough, they can repeal the laws of the jungle through human-made laws and action. The main premise of evolution is belief in the laws of natural selection. There are predators and prey. In evolutionary theory, there is a recognition of domestication and natural selection. Read “The Origin of Species” by Darwin some time. I don’t think you can be an animal rights supporter and believe in evolution. Animal rights activists want to ignore or repeal the laws of nature, using the laws of man. Good luck. Won’t happen. Animal rights supporters are anti-human, which is anti-nature (humans are part of nature, by definition).

The power and danger of environmental science: Animal rights supporters are anti-science… no evolution, no experimentation, no domestication, no medicine, no engineering… nothing. That goes against the goals and practices of honest environmentalists, who use good science to advance the quality of life on earth.

The preservation and improvement of the natural world through limiting human intervention: Animal rights activists only have this in common with environmentalists. Yet, even in this area, they disagree. Animal rights believers support the elimination of all domesticated animals and see humans as inherently evil, whereas environmentalists don’t support these positions. True environmentalists don’t hate dogs. True environmentalists don’t believe in the mass extinction of mankind.

True environmentalists recognize that all indigenous peoples had domesticated dogs: Eskimos, Native Americans, Africans, Asians, etc. They all had dogs and lived in nature. Dogs and humans, according to most evolutionary theories and studies, have been companions for at least 10,000 years. Animal rights wackos want to end this relationship between dogs and humans, by causing dogs to go extinct.

I think if you are an environmentalist you cannot believe in, or support, animal rights. You can't have it both ways.

Spay & Neuter Lies

Do you really believe that?

I don’t. And you shouldn’t either.

These kinds of “statistics” are claimed by animal rights organizations and well meaning, but uninformed activists.

These kinds of “facts” are used in designing dog law.

They are bogus, and not based on any kind of valid scientific study or survey. There are many such “facts” being floated out there by animal rights nuts. Just like the one where they say that neutering (castration) lowers the risk of testicular cancer… well, duh… you can’t get testicular cancer in a dog without testicles! If cancer was such a big issue with intact animals, then all the animal kingdom would have died out thousands of years ago. These are animal rights lies, made up to scare you, because you care for your dog.

I have worked with innumerable dog bite cases. Not one was solved through spaying or neutering. The dog was the same aggressive dog before and after. It is a wasted effort. Besides, some dogs SHOULD be bred, because of their outstanding genetics… you’ll never see any of that in any animal rights literature.

BEWARE: The spay/ neuter debate is just a backdoor way for animal rights nuts to ban the breeding of all dogs.
