For many people, hiking with a dog is a year round activity. I have been caught, on a long hike, coming back too late, with the sun going down and things getting dark. I HIGHLY recommend having a headlamp when hiking with a dog. They don't weigh much, but they are worth their weight in gold. You need your hands free when hiking with a dog, and it is too hard to hold a flashlight in one hand and hold a dog leash in the other... and possibly dangerous.
