Shame On The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA)

The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) explicitly states it does not support electronic collars (e-collars/shock collars) that deliver aversive stimuli. They cite risks of pain, stress, and negative welfare outcomes, and recommend positive reinforcement training (or trainers skilled in it) instead. They note that for predatory aggression (e.g., chasing sheep/rabbits), there exists an “effective humane alternative,” so e-collars are not supported—even if euthanasia is the other option.

** I cannot support a policy position or organization that would endorse this tradeoff. My opinion is it is inhumane.

[Note “predatory aggression” is a layman’s term. Read “On Aggression” by Lorenz. I expect better from professional organizations. Further “risk” isn’t the same as a known outcome and is on a spectrum.]
