World's Ugliest Dog?

Elwood, a two-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, has been crowned the world's ugliest dog

I really have a problem with this kind of thing. I am tired of the freak shows in the media, I guess. I'm sick of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Michael Jackson, the Bill & Hillary Clinton show, defrocked Catholic priests, over-steroided bodybuilders, and then, this kind of thing.

Why can't we start glorifying success, hard work, thrift, education, honor, faith, goodness, fitness, faithfulness, and raising functional families?

Well, I certainly want to back you up on that one.

My husband will attest that I poke fun at the mega, multi-million dollar, prime time television awards shows for silly talents like acting (not that it's not a skill, but really...), yet we don't have (deserved) award shows for researchers who are actually saving lives. (And don't even try to say the Nobel prize is enough.) ;-)

I couldn't care less which celeb. is getting divorced or starring in which film. What a colossal waste of time.

But I accept that it's just not sexy and attention-grabbing to do a story like "well-trained dogs do everything their owners ask" or "nerdy lab technician slaves for 18 years before making a slight improvement in our understanding of cancer prevention".

It's too bad. The wrong people get all the attention and rewards for all the wrong reasons. We sure know that's true where dogs are concerned. "Anyone who thinks 'there's no such thing as bad press' has never worked in 'pit bull' rescue."
