Record Number Of Dog Poisonings In South Africa

“Please do not become a poison statistic in my file.”

This year the many dog poisonings have shocked Pretoria residents and in the last month more than twenty dogs died.

Close to a hundred cats were also reported poisoned, mostly by people who do not like cats.

“We cannot catch the culprits without help from the police services but we can implement measures,” says Sophie Trollope from Service Animal Monitoring Unit (Samu).

Samu is currently communicating with the SAPS to stop this cruelty.

Apparently a new trick used by criminals now is to burn chemicals or spray a gas through windows or drains to put residents into a deeper sleep.

Rekord received calls from people all over Pretoria to whom this had happened, usually together with the poisoning of their dogs.

Sophie advises people to keep their windows closed and to check their gardens for strange objects each morning.

According to Samu’s statistics, most dogs are poisoned between 01:00 and 03:30 but Sophie suggests that people lock their animals inside a closed area as soon as it becomes dark.

One can also teach dogs to only eat food received from family members, which may be difficult but proves the best option.

This is downright scary... burglars using poisons to knock out their potential victims, and using chemicals to kill their dogs. What is this world coming to?
